What the Heck Does “Cabaribalusion” Mean? by Ansuya
The word Caba-ribal-usion is a blend of three words: Cabaret, Tribal and Fusion. I draw freely from the music, costuming, make-up and dance techniques from these genres plus add my own innovations to create a style that feels uniquely my own.
The term Cabaret refers to Bellydance that is typically performed in night clubs. It can include the traditional Bellydance moves popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s Arabic night clubs in New York and Los Angeles and/or the more modern Egyptian approach to movement and costuming popular in the 1980’s in the Middle East and America.
The term Tribal refers to a movement and costuming approach more prevalent among the tribes across the desert sands of the Middle East, India, and Spain. Though around since ancient times, a 1990’s phenomenon in America gave these flavors a new focus and evolution which now can include the addition of urban movements such as pop and lock, hip hop, and gothic elements.
The term Fusion refers to the current trend of drawing from any style of dance. This can include Indian, Spanish, Gypsy, African, and more. The idea being for the Bellydancer to accept the influence of any performance or art elements that inspire and enrich the artists style.
My aim in creating this Cabaribalusion style is to encourage dancers to utilize many styles, represent themselves, and inspire others to realize, actualize and nurture the unique artist that resides within them.
